Notwithstanding, in both speech and creation particularly in the last mentioned, in light of the fact that the author has sufficient chance to discard them they point out undue the writerââ¬â¢s putative wisdom as well as mind and are normally toiled and diverting. Bryan A. Earn, the senior member of American English use, calls such expressing ââ¬Å"word patronageâ⬠; rhetoricians allude to it as metanoia or correctio. Iââ¬â¢ve never met one that didnââ¬â¢t irritate me, and I exhort revision: 1. Not to Put Too Fine a Point on It This intricately vainglorious articulation is conveyed as a rule previously however once in a while after one composes precisely what one methods, regardless of whether it might affront a peruser. The author is, for this situation, doing the exact inverse putting a fine point, or hitting, the peruser with reality: ââ¬Å"Not to put too fine a point on it, however your breath is toxic.â⬠7. Not to Mention Obviously, this expression quickly goes before something referenced disregarding the writerââ¬â¢s vow also it: ââ¬Å"The flooding demolished the furnishings, also the floor.â⬠It is maybe the most harmless passage on this rundown (I state so on the grounds that I use it in some cases), now and again accommodating to underline that what follows is more critical a point than a previous explanation, yet consider, during update, regardless of whether your announcement can remain all alone without it. 8. In a manner of speaking ââ¬Å"So to speakâ⬠is a less complex form of ââ¬Å"in a way of speaking,â⬠however a few brains myself included enjoy its utilization after an inadvertent (or a purposeful) play on words, to ensure the audience saw it and is properly delighted: ââ¬Å"The pregnant lady was hopeful, so to speak.â⬠recorded as a hard copy, be that as it may, it is charming and grinding. 9. To Coin a Phrase This expression is a conciliatory sentiment for utilizing a clichã ©, an endeavor by the author to guarantee that the peruser realizes the essayist is penitent about letting a trite articulation free: ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s like placing the fox responsible for the henhouse, to coin a phrase.â⬠10. There are only two types of cost: direct labor and burden. Burden is grouped into a single cost pool and represents the cost of both testing rooms, engineering burden costs (software and tooling development), plus the administrative costs of the division. Burden was then calculated for each lot, with a burden rate of 145% The lotââ¬â¢s total cost is the sum of the direct labor cost added to the burden cost. This existing cost system failed because of three main reasons. The existing cost system is related to direct labor hours. -Vendor certification: with vendor certification, Selgrimââ¬â¢s suppliers do the primary testing of components which reduces the number of tests performed by the company. Indeed, from 2003 to 2005, because of vendor certification, the number of direct labor hours per lot has noticed a 30% decrease. We will write a custom essay sample on Seligram Inc. Case Study or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Less tests done means less direct labor hours per lot. -The shift from simple inspection services to broader-based test technology: ETO became less competitive on elementary testing and on large lots. However, there were still cheaper regarding engineering support and high technology testing. This change has led to a shift in the labor mix, reducing the quantity of direct labor and increasing indirect labor hours. -The need for automatic equipment: the new high technology components required more automatic and longer testing. Increasing automation would then lead to a smaller need of direct labor and would increase expenses in terms of automated equipment. Those are the three main reasons why the current cost system failed: they decreased the direct labor hours allocated per lot and increased burden. Finally, this would increase the final manufacturing cost and would make ETO less and less competitive. -Calculate the reported costs of the five components described in the case a-The reported costs of the five components using the existing cost system Existing systemManagerââ¬â¢s systemConsultantââ¬â¢s system Lotââ¬â¢s total cost12509. 75 $12767. 2 $13658. 41 $ Using the consultantââ¬â¢s system makes it possible to know more precisely the total cost of each lot by allocating each cost to its real driver. That is why the total cost per lot is more expensive in the consultantââ¬â¢s system than in the others. One can notice also that indeed, the managerââ¬â¢s system is better than the existing one. Still, the preferable system to use is the system proposed by the consultant, as explained in the next board. In the managerââ¬â¢s system, the second pool includes all other burden costs and are charged based on machine hours; where as, the consultant treats the machine hours as two separate cost pools which are the main testing room and the mechanical room. This system leads to a large percentage of total cost of machine hours. Existing systemConsultant system Second poolMain roomMechanical room

Winston Churchill Essays (2588 words) - Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill Sir Winston Spencer Churchill Winston Churchill was born in 1874 and died, aged ninety, in 1965. He was active in British politics for almost sixty years and was twice Prime Minister. He was a soldier, an artist, a historian, and a journalist, as well as a politician. He was a man of great mental energy, of vivid imagination, and powerful ambition. He was frequently the center of stormy political activity; criticism and abuse were often showered upon him. But he died respected and mourned not only by his own nation, but by the world, for which he had done so much when he led the fight against Nazi tyranny and refused to surrender or to despair of victory. (Gilbert 13) On November 30, 1874, Winston Spencer Churchill was born to Lord Randolph Churchill and Jennie Churchill at Blenheim Palace. In 1888, he was placed in Harrow School. At the end of his first year at Harrow, the boy's grades were still the lowest in his class. Reluctantly his father gave up any notion of Winston's following in his own footsteps. Remembering his son's passion for playing at war, Lord Randolph asked him if he was still interested in the army. Winston was delighted over the thought that his father recognized his military genius. The sad truth that his father considered him hopeless in any other field never occurred to the self-assured lad. (Manchester 13) He was then sent to Sandhurst, a Royal Military Academy, in 1893. He joined the army and began selling articles to the Daily Graphic. In 1898, his first book, The Malakand Field Force, was published. The next year he resigned from the army to enter politics. July 6, 1899 Churchill lost his first election as a Conservative candidate. When the Boer War broke out, the London Morning Post sent Churchill as a reporter. A month after arriving in South Africa he was captured by the Boers but made a daring escape. When he returned to England in 1900 he ran for election again and won. ?Entering Parliament in 1901, he rose in the course of a very few years to a position in which every major event in England's affairs was part of his life story? (Coolidge 1). Churchill joined the Liberal party in 1904, after other Conservatives pushed for a Tariff Reform. The next year the Conservative party was defeated in the House of Commons and the Liberals offered Churchill the seat of Under Secretary for the colonies. In 1906, Churchill published another book, this one being a biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill who died in 1895. In 1908, the Prime Minister appointed Churchill as the President of the Board of Trade, which was his first seat in the cabinet. Later that year he married Clementine Hozier. In July of 1909 their first child, Diana, was born. Churchill was promoted again in 1910 as Home Secretary, which made him responsible for law and order. In the May of 1911 the Churchills had their first son, Randolph. October of 1911 brought Churchill a new position, First Lord of Admiralty. ?In the Cabinet Churchill argued with his colleagues to get money for the expansion of the Navy? (Jones 16). He felt that there had to be an expansion of the navy to compete with Germany's increase in sea power. In 1914, he strongly backed the Irish Home Rule by threatening rebellious Ulster Protestants with the Royal Navy. He was greatly criticized for his extreme method of solving the Irish problem. On August 4, 1914, war with Germany began and Churchill's expanded Navy was ready for war. Churchill was removed from the Admiralty in 1915 because of his failed plan to seize the Dardanelles from Germany. The Dardanelles haunted Churchill for years because he was removed from office before his full plan had been executed. After he was not included in the new War Cabinet, Churchill resigned from the government and joined the fighting in France during the November of 1915. Six months later he left the army to begin politics again. He felt he had learned a great deal from being in the trenches. Churchill used this knowledge to make critical speeches about the slaughter he had seen in the trenches. He championed

New York University Graduate School Application ââ¬â Example Essay Free Online Research Papers New York University Graduate School Application Example Essay 1.Think about the decisions you have made in your life. Describe the following: PAST: What choices have you made that led you your current position? PRESENT: Why is a Stern MBA necessary at this point in your life? FUTURE: What is your desired position upon graduation from the Stern School? Since I had worked in the xxx department of xxx, established by my deceased father, the yearly income was $xx million in 19xx, my major problem was a lack of knowledge in Finance and Management. Upon graduation from undergraduate studies, I was employed in the Management Planning Team. Because I did not have the background in business administration from majoring in xxx Literature in undergraduate, I realized the difficulty in grasping the concept of general company matters, marketing analysis, and setting up the short and long-term marketing plan. When I participated in the future development of xxx and sales project for 10 months that began in February 19xx, I realized that I was incapable of successfully performing my duties as an Assistant Manager with 8 staff members for a project in which the company heavily depended upon. It was then that I had realized what special talent was needed to become a successful manager. For instance, while analyzing xxx, xxxââ¬â¢s technological advantage and marketing strategies, I realized the importance of learning Marketing Research and Strategy. I also realized the importance of Financial Management and Corporate Financial Policies when planning sales and marketing strategies for the future sales of xxx and strategies for increasing our market. Through these experiences, I became strongly motivated to applying to your college. If I am given the opportunity, I would like to study Corporate Finance and Financial Strategy. In my situation that I should come back to the xxx which was established by my deceased father and join the management team, without the knowledge of finance, I could not successfully manage the company and be an incompetent businessman. I would like to focus my studies on subjects relating to Entrepreneurship and Marketing. I believe that I am qualified to be competitive among your students because I have earned a certificate of Accounting an d Finance, sponsored by the xxx. Along with this basic background, I am currently studying Finance as a graduate student at the xxx University Business School. Stern School is my top choice for two main reasons. First of all, Stern offers diverse courses such as ââ¬ËRestructuring and Firm Industries,ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËVenture Capital Financing,ââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËInvestment Strategy,ââ¬â¢ that are not offered at the xxx University. Second reason is the many advantages that can be offered from the location of your school, with worldwide competitive corporations gathered in New York. Upon graduation from the Stern School, I plan to be the most representative person at xxx by learning and applying the strategies of these large growing global corporations in New York, and if possible I would like to analyze our competitors, xxx and xxx. I would also like to have experience with the U.S. market and itsââ¬â¢ customer characteristics in preparation for future plan of xxx to set up xxx subsidiaries in U.S. I plan to work for 5 years at xxx after graduation from Stern, by improving xxx so that it will rank second to xxx. My long-term goal is to be able to challenge the CEOââ¬â¢s of the top 5 ranking companies in Korea, such as Hyundai of Korea. In addition, to achieve my goals, I plan to earn the CFA certification upon my MBA studies. Armed with the CFA certification and Top Schoolââ¬â¢s International bent, strength in finance and management training, I will be ready to place that call to the trader in China, conduct a teleconference with xxx corporation in Tokyo, and visit the CFO in America. 2.Please agree or disagree with two of the following quotes. Give relevant reasons and/or examples to support your answer. ââ¬Å"The truth is the strongest argumentâ⬠An argument is one of the most important factor that creates an economic gap between western and eastern countries. The most critical theory in the West is an argument society. Because I grew up in a strict Confucius family, the idea of an argument with an older person was not accepted and prohibited. Those of the younger generation were to obey the older unconditionally. I was educated that because those who were older were considered to be wiser, there was no need to challenge them in their beliefs. Not only was I raised under Confucianism, but most of Korean students were educated and have been habitually behaving this way as well, that any form of disagreement with an elder is unacceptable. Generally, most students even after they have graduated from college, try not to argue with older students or professors. I came to realize the necessity of an argumentation society in Korea from my 2 years and a half experience at xxx. Top executives generally make critical decisions for the future of the company, solely based on their ideas, and by ignoring the other employees. Based on my experience in the company, a major decision without making a detailed analysis and not considering employeesââ¬â¢ opinions was bound to be a failure, damaging the company with a tremendous loss. I would like to have the opportunity to experience and study in an argument society as can be demonstrated in American universities and companies, so that I can apply this theory for the future management of xxx. Another matter I would like to discuss about an argument is the truth behind an argumentation. I believe that the truth should support an argument persuasively. Even though an argument without a form of truth can win in the short-term, it is bound to be a failure in the long-run by itsââ¬â¢ true evidence. I strongly believe that an argument under truth is a critical factor in the success of a companyââ¬â¢s management. Today, some companiesââ¬â¢ management strategy focuses only on techniques that can be beneficial for an argument rather than focusing on an argument based on the truth, in which some companies view as the key factor. In the end, the company will not survive in the long-run because the truth will be proven by the consumers. I would like to use such a situation of a company that induces the customers with false argumentation and their consequence as a precaution to the future strategic management of xxx. ââ¬Å"Change in all things is sweetâ⬠Aristotle insisted that all changes are not developmental, but I would like to see changes in the most positive way. In my philosophy, although innovation can bring about negative consequences, effort for innovation should not be negatively perceived or underestimated. The relevance of this theory can be seen not only through my deceased father who had been working for the company for 30 years, but through my experience in the company for two and a half years, where employees were hesitant to make changes. My father has always been striving for ââ¬Ëchange,ââ¬â¢ even though he was raised and educated in the typical Korean Confucian family. He always challenged the companyââ¬â¢s conservative culture and encouraged a ââ¬Ëcreative mind,ââ¬â¢ by emphasizing a common Korean proverb ââ¬Ëold water in a small hole will be decayed.ââ¬â¢ When I left the Management Planning Team of xxx, I proposed a sole brand strategy for the company beyond the set boundary of 5 years â⬠â xxx goal called OEM, with the strong influence of my late father. In order to be in competition with xxx, xxx and to create a global brand, xxx should in the long-run change to a sole brand priority beyond OEM that captures 70% of the total income. Even though my proposal was slow in itsââ¬â¢ process, I believe that change in itself will be the cornerstone for the firmââ¬â¢s future development, since xxx never had significant changes for the past 15 years. First, the most important factor in change is the belief in success. Second, by investigation and definite strategic planning, there is a less chance for risks in the process of change. We should not mistakenly assume that once we make a change, we will have definitive results for success without any strategic preparation. I strongly support that a company that tries to make changes without the basis of knowledge and experience is bound to fail. These are the reasons for my desire to study in your college. 3.Describe yourself to your MBA classmates My nickname is ââ¬ËGodfather.ââ¬â¢ I admire the old movie star named Marlon Brando because of his strong characteristics, which characterizes me. My close friend calls me the ââ¬ËGodfatherââ¬â¢ because I listen to my friendsââ¬â¢ worries and try to help them in the best way that I can. I am thankful to my parents who enabled me to grow up in a family that was economically and physically stable. I never had the experience of not being well off because my father was the president. Some might argue that this background was my weakness, however it was fortunate that I became a person who did not take this privilege for advantage and a person with self-control. I was strictly educated by my father who had a strong belief that ââ¬Å"money can spoil a child.â⬠The other reason for being called the ââ¬ËGodfather,ââ¬â¢ is that when I was in middle school and high school, I secretly helped some of my poor friends who could not afford tuition. I remember back in high s chool when I helped a friend without letting him know for a year and a half, who was on the brink of being sent out for not paying tuition. However, when this secret was found out, my friends always called me the ââ¬ËGodfather.ââ¬â¢ Growing up in a financially stable family influenced me to be a person with composure and flexibility. Such characteristics can be reflected upon my experience. When I was in the xxx management planning team, as an Assistant Manager, I delayed the deadline for the report and analysis of the xxx in the Korean market, even though the deadline was already set by the manager. Conflict arose between us. I did feel sorry for my wrongdoing, but I believe that managers should not push the employees especially when given a difficult task. From experience, I can say that trying to complete a difficult task within a limited amount of time can reduce the employeeââ¬â¢s motivation and as a result make the work less qualitative. If I am given the opportunity to be a MBA candidate, I would like my fellow colleagues to recognize me as a person with flexibility a person who is willing to spend all night together, exploring new ideas for a report or a person who can help others relieve their stres s when feeling tense. Thank you. 4.Think about the decisions you have made in your life. Describe the following: PAST: What choices have you made that led you your current position?
